Wild and Domestic plants, Seeds and Herbs

All my plants are grown organically without the use of artifical pesticides and fertilizers although I can't afford organic certification. As well as herbs and wild food plants I also sell my excess vegetable seeds.

Soapwort (Saponaria officinalis): Soapwort is a vigorous plant with thick underground runners that can be invasive.The leaves and root can be used to make soapwort shampoo, used for washing wool or delicate aged items (e.g. tapestries) or herbal shampoos. There are plenty recipies to be found on the web. Put in well drained poor soil (in rich soil in becomes impossible to constrain!)

Lemon Thyme (Thymus citriodorus ): Thyme is a hardy aromatic perennial, this variety is a bushy lemon scented thyme with marbled white and green leaves and pink flowers. Excellent for culinary use, is also used for its antiseptic properties.

Rosemary(Rosmarinus officinalis): A woody, perennial herb with fragrant evergreen leaves. The fresh and dried leaves are used frequently in traditional Mediterranean cuisine as an herb complementing a wide variety of foods. Also has antiseptic properties.

French Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus): Tarragon is a perennial herb which grows to 120-150 cm tall, with slender branched stems. A key herb in french cuisine with an intense flavour. Most often used with fish, cream sauces, and to flavour vinigars but enhances the flavour of most meat and vegetables.

Sage (Salvia officinalis):Another hardy evergreen, as well as its powerful flavour it acts as a preservative.

Chives:A hardy perennial growing to 30cm tall, member of the onion family used a a savory garnish. Grown as a companion to carrots and roses to deter the carrot fly and black spot. Photo is of mature plant. Comes as a small cluster of bulbs ready to plant out in the garden.

House Leek: Very hardy, pretty and easy to grown, likes a well drained thin soil. The leave are astringent, the juice in excellent for nettle stings, insect bites, burns and other skin problems.

Lavender: A refreshing detoxifying tea, a natural antihistamine, a source of various vitamins and minerals including folic acid, vit C, iron and Calcium

Peppermint: Needs little introduction, a hardy vigourous plant, can be invasive.

Variegated Peppermint: An attractive variegated form of peppermint with splashes of cream on its dark green leaves. It is better suited to small garden than the standard peppermint as it slightly less vigorous. Grows to about 2ft (60cm).

Yarrow: A hardy perennial plant that produces one to several stems (0.2 to 1m tall) and has a rhizomatous growth form. Usually flowers from may through june. Yarrow prefers a poor well drained soil and is drought tolerant -thus can be used to combat erosion. It is also a common plant in butterfly gardens, is reputed to have many medicinal uses and speeds the rotting of compost.

Wild Garlic: A woodland plant, with the same flavour and medicinal use as domestic garlic. The leaves, bulbs, and flowers, which appear in spring, are used in cooking. The leaves and flowers can be aeten raw and are good in salads. Often used as a companion plant to discourage pests -can smell very strong in the spring!

Sea Radish: The ancestor of our garden radish, a large, straggling plant, often more than 1m in height, thrives on poor sandy soil. The young pods and leaves have a hot radish-like flavour, the flowers are particularly good in salads. The large radish flavoured root can be tough,but I like it baked.

Horse Radish: A hardy invasive plant, you may want to consider growing it in a container! The roots can be grated into dips and spreads as well as used to make horse radish sauce, they lose their pungent flavour when cooked. The autumn root is extremely strong while the spring root is comparetively mild. A circulatory stimulant with antibiotic properties, it is also usful for preserving food.

Common Vetch: An ancestor of the pea with pretty purple/crimson flowers, the young shoots and the pea-like seeds are aeten.
